Event Sanctioning: Your Guide to Legitimate & Insured Badminton Events in Ghana

To ensure the safety, integrity, and growth of badminton in Ghana, the Ghana Badminton Association (GBA) mandates that all official tournaments and events be formally sanctioned.
This process is not only a requirement of our international federation, but is also a legal requirement under the laws of Ghana, specifically the National Sports Act, 2016 (LI 2477).
Sanctioning your event with Ghana Badminton is the essential first step to ensuring it is recognized, safe, and successful.
When planning an event or tournament, Ghana Badminton advises organisers to take advantage of our Event Sanction Licence service, which is offered to affiliated clubs, organisations, and charities.

To ensure the safety, integrity, and growth of badminton in Ghana, the Ghana Badminton Federation (GBF) mandates that all official tournaments and events be formally sanctioned.

What does an Event Sanction Licence include?

  • Compliance with Ghanaian Law (LI 2477)
The  Sports Act & LI 2477, designates the Ghana Badminton Federation as the sole governing body for the sport of badminton in Ghana. Hosting an unsanctioned event that purports to be a public event competition either recreational or otherwise, is a violation of this law. Sanctioning ensures your event operates within the legal framework of Ghanaian sports.
  • Official Recognition & Validity
Only a GBA-sanctioned event is recognized as an official badminton competition. This means:

    • Results are official and can be used for national rankings.

    • Athlete performances are recorded and contribute to national team selection.

    • The event is listed on the official GBF Event calendars.

  • Access to Public Liability Insurance
This is one of the most crucial reasons for sanctioning. LI 2477 mandates that all sanctioned sporting events must be covered by public liability insurance.

    • Sanctioning provides insurance coverage for participants, spectators, and volunteers, protecting the event organizers from personal financial liability in case of accidents or injuries.

    • Hosting an event without this insurance is a significant financial and legal risk.

  • Access to Technical Support & Resources
As a sanctioned event, you gain access to the expertise and resources of Ghana Badminton, including:

    • Guidance on competition rules and regulations.

    • Support with tournament software and draw management.

    • Assistance in securing qualified Technical Officials (umpires, referees).

    • Promotion of your event through official GBA channels.

  • The right to use official Ghana Badminton branding in all promotional materials.
  • Upholding Standards & Integrity
Sanctioning ensures your event meets the required standards for fair play, anti-doping, and athlete welfare, safeguarding the integrity of the sport in Ghana.
