The Ghana Badminton Heritage Project: Connecting Our Past, Present, and Future
The Ghana Badminton Heritage Project: Connecting Our Past, Present, and Future
Established in early 2024, the Ghana Badminton Heritage Project aims to honour and preserve the rich history of our sport. The initiative began with a meeting of interested volunteers and has since evolved into a dedicated core group tasked with driving the project forward from 2024 to 2028.
Aligned with our vision to foster ‘a deep-rooted sense of belonging for everyone within our badminton community,’ this project seeks to ensure that the present and future of Ghanaian badminton are proudly connected to its past.
The ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive digital and physical archive, alongside heritage assets that will be used across our community to celebrate our shared history and cultivate this sense of pride and identity.
“Understanding where you’ve been to know where you could go”
“Since its inception in 1962, Ghana Badminton has been built on the passion and dedication of countless individuals,” said a Ghana Badminton Spokesperson. “We believe that to chart a bold course for the future, we must first understand and honour our past. This project is vital to emotionally connect every level of our sport, from our pioneers to our newest players, and we are excited about its potential to unite us all.”
The Four Overarching Project Themes
Preserve and Showcase: To collect, catalogue, and showcase the history of Ghanaian badminton through a collection of digital and physical assets, making our heritage accessible to everyone.
Bring History to Life: To launch campaigns and communications that connect today’s achievements with the legendary players, events, and lessons of the past.
Re-engage Our Community: To reconnect with the people and organisations who have been the foundation of our sport—from past champions to dedicated administrators—and create pathways for them to remain involved.
Inform Future Strategy: To ensure the strategic direction of Ghana Badminton is informed by our history, learning from the past to progressively enhance all formats of the sport for years to come.
Introducing the Ghana Badminton Hall of Fame & Historical Archive
A cornerstone of this project will be the establishment of the Ghana Badminton Hall of Fame and a definitive national records database. We are on a mission to locate, verify, and celebrate our nation’s badminton achievements from 1962 to the present.
This includes:
Founding the Ghana Badminton Hall of Fame to honour our greatest players, coaches, and contributors.
Achieving a complete and official record of our national champions, international representatives, and historic milestones.
Progress Made to Date
The core project group has already made significant strides, including:
Initiating the cataloguing of existing Ghana Badminton archive materials.
Laying the groundwork for the Ghana Badminton Hall of Fame.
Beginning outreach to former players and officials to capture their stories and memorabilia.
Planning for the future celebration of key historical milestones.
Heritage Project Core Group
Ghana Badminton would like to thank the members of the core group for their valued and ongoing input and dedication to this vital initiative.
