Para Badminton teams
The current Para Badminton team can trace it roots back to 2019 when it was announced that Paris had won the right to stage the 2024 Paralympics.
The Rise of Competitive Para Badminton in Ghana
As a result of its growing popularity and recognition, the search began for talented athletes to represent Ghana on the international stage – and our national Para Badminton programme continues to grow stronger each year.
The Beginnings of International Para Badminton
Para Badminton is a dynamic and fast-paced Paralympic sport that follows the same fundamental rules as badminton, with classifications ensuring fair competition across various impairment types.
The sport has a global history, but its journey to the pinnacle of sport was cemented when it was included in the Paralympic Games for the first time at Tokyo 2020. This was a landmark moment for athletes worldwide.
Ghanaian athletes have since begun to make their mark, entering various African and international competitions, aiming to climb the world rankings and compete on the biggest stages.
Competition at the International Level
At the international level, players are classified into sport classes to ensure fair competition. These classes are grouped into impairment categories, such as:
WH 1 & 2 (Wheelchair)
SL 3 &4 (Standing/Lower Limb)
SU5 (Standing/Upper Limb)
SS (Short Stature)
Each class competes for its own medals, creating a level playing field and showcasing incredible skill and athleticism.
Domestic Competition & Getting Involved
Para Badminton is a wonderfully inclusive sport. At the domestic level, anyone can play and compete, whether they have an impairment or not, often in integrated or dedicated events.
Ghana Badminton is committed to developing opportunities for participation and competition nationwide.
