Ghana national teams
The performance of Ghana’s national badminton teams is structured within a clear international framework, governed by three key themes.
Ghana Badminton is a member of the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), which is one of five continental bodies under the global governing body, the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The National Team Structure
Ghana Badminton operates a tiered national team system to nurture talent from a young age:
- Senior National Team (SNT):The pinnacle, featuring Ghana’s top players who compete domestically and internationally.
- Junior National Team (U19):A development squad closely aligned with the senior team.
- U13 & U15 National Teams:Age-group cohorts designed to prepare players for continental and world championships at their respective levels.
Pathways to International Competition
Qualification for major tournaments is a multi-stage process:
- Junior & Seniors African Championships: Performance here is crucial for securing spots in World Championships.
- African Games & Continental Events:These tournaments serve as key qualifying platforms for global events and are vital for athlete ranking points.
- Olympic Games:Qualification for the Olympics is managed by the IOC and BWF. Ghanaian athletes earn quotas based on their international ranking within the Olympic qualification period. A qualified athlete directly represents Ghana at the Games.
- Commonwealth Games:Qualification for the Commonwealth is managed by the Commonwealth Games Federation and CGA. Ghanaian athletes earn quotas based on their international ranking within the Mix Team qualification period. A qualified athlete directly represents Ghana at the Games.
